Is 2025 the end for Perimeter Wires?

Perimeter Wire-Free Robot Mowers for UK Gardens

Until recently, robot mowers with perimeter wires have been the most trusted solution for reliable robotic lawn mowing.

Challenges in UK Gardens

UK gardens are often intricate, with features like flower beds, dense tree cover, and seasonal changes. These complexities have presented significant challenges for RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) technology. While RTK offers the promise of removing perimeter wires, its reliance on satellite signals has made it difficult to implement effectively in the UK—particularly in gardens surrounded by trees and buildings. As a result, RTK robot mowers were previously only suitable for wide, open spaces.

The Breakthrough in Robot Lawn Mowing

In 2024, a breakthrough occurred when several manufacturers combined RTK with advanced AI-driven camera systems. These intelligent cameras can now “remember” areas where satellite signals are weak, greatly enhancing reliability. Segway led the way with the introduction of the Navimow i Series—an AI-powered robot mower that has already proven extremely popular in the UK. With thousands sold and a quoted failure rate of just 0.5%, it’s clear that the robot mower landscape has evolved dramatically.

This new generation of perimeter wire-free robot mowers is far more reliable and flexible, overcoming many of the frustrations associated with earlier models.

Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond

In 2025, this technology has advanced even further. Models like the Segway Navimow X3 can now manage lawns up to 10,000 sqm, making them suitable not only for small UK gardens but also for larger properties and commercial landscapes.

It’s now difficult to justify the use of wired robot mowers, as their primary benefits have been surpassed by these next-generation, satellite-and-camera-powered models.
